UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in July 2024

On July 2, 2024, the President of the Ukrainian European Studies Association, Oksana Holovko-Havrysheva, participated in the II UNICOM Workshop ‘Resilient Universities-Resilient Communities’. The event addressed the resilience of HEIs and communities and the practices of Ukrainian HEIs during wartime. The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine) hosted the event. During the workshop following issues were addressed: 

  • Community-university cooperation as a resilience-enhancing factor during wartime.

  • The role of the nongovernmental organizations in fostering university-community cooperation and boosting resilience and sustainability globally and locally.

  • The practices of Ukrainian UNICOM consortium members focused on community-university cooperation during wartime.

  • Discussion on contemporary challenges for community-university cooperation and further actions to enhance the third missions of HEIs.

UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in May 2024

On May 3, 2024 the President of Ukrainian European Studies  Association  Oksana Holovko-Havrysheva and the UESA Board Member Maryna Lytvyn participated at the Round Table Discussion ‘Recent Results and Next Steps’ with the partners of «University-Community Cooperation: Strengthening Cooperation» - Erasmus+ project (UNICOM). The following were discussed:

  • The results of study visit to Riga (a reflective summary of each Ukrainian partner).

  • Dissemination of the project results within the Ukrainian partner institutions.

  • Vision of the Third Mission Centres at Ukrainian Universities (models of the third mission realization, model of the Centre, strategies of the third mission realization at Ukrainian PIs) and instruments for enhancement of the third mission in higher education).

From May 27, 2024 to June 1, 2024, the President of the Ukrainian European Studies Association, Oksana Holovko-Havrysheva, took part in the training visit on the third mission implementation and the coordination meeting at the University of Genoa (Italy). During the meetings, the practices of the University of Genoa on the third mission were presented with a particular focus on inclusion, research commercialization, and technology transfer and the peculiarities of the third mission realization by the medical school. During the coordination meeting, the following issues were addressed:

  • Research results report under the WP 1 and partner responsibilities under the WP 2;

  • The problem definition for the policy paper, its structure, and strategic steps for the policy development;

  • Strategic session on the third mission management options at Ukrainian HEIs during wartime and in the perspective of enhancing their role in post-war recovery. 

In May 2024 the article "Third Mission of Universities: Regulatory Frameworks in a Comparative Perspective", co-authored by Oksana Holovko-Havrysheva, UESA President, Oksana Krayevska and Svitlana Sas (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv) was published in Geopolitical, Social Security and Freedom Journal.

The publication addressed regulatory practices in Italy, Czechia, Germany, Latvia, Sweden, and Ukraine while realizing the third mission in higher education. It has been argued that regulatory frameworks are better developed at the intra-institutional level with a focus on the entrepreneurial dimension of the HEI's third mission, while the social engagement regulatory frameworks require further conceptualization and strategic visions.

UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in March 2024

The UESA team participated at the workshop and training on the  sustainable development and community engagement in the framework of the third mission of HEIs , which took place at the University of Latvia (Riga, Latvia) on March 25-28, 2024.

University third mission and economic growth, business development potential, collaboration with social partners, lifelong and continuing education, sustainable development of universities and communities were considered and discussed during the special session «Resilient universities and resilient communities», which was hosted under the auspices of the UL 82nd International Scientific Conference of the Latvian University.

UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in December 2023

The UESA team participated at the I UNICOM Dissemination conference "University and Inclusion", which took place on December 14-15, 2023 in the hybrid format in Rome (Italy). The event was hosted and organized by the Fondazione Sicurezza e Liberta in Rome (Italy).

During the conference participants discussed the actual issues of the cooperationbetween the communities and universities with a particular focus on the inclusion. The research results on the cooperation between communities and universities, conducted among the UNICOM partners, were presented highlighting the key priorities for such cooperation in times of war.

UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in November 2023

The UESA team participated at the final study visit to Lund University, which took place on November 6-9, 2023.

On 6-9 November 2023 the UESA President Oksana Holovko-Havrysheva and the UESA Board Member Maryna Lytvyn participated at the study visit to Lund University (Sweden), where the practices of the realization of the third mission were presented. The Lund University, being estbalished in XVII century, is ranked among best 100 world universities and has more than 45000 students with 28% of international students from more than 130 countries, offers 266 educational programs and well established international cooperation with 670 universities in 75 countries. Together with the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as well as partner universities from Ukraine, Germany, Latvia, Czechia, Italy discussed cooperation possibilities with the Innovation Office of the Lund University, academic coommunication and cooperation rules.

UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in October 2023

The UESA team was active within the realization of the UNICOM project.

On October 26, 2023 the special sessions in the frame of the UESA ANNUAL CONGRESS 2023 was devoted to the issues for the cooperation between communitites and university. The special session was moderated by UESA Board Member Maryna Lytvyn and over 20 participants from all parts of Ukraine had the opportunities to disucuss the role of universities as agents of changes with Olha Stoliaryk (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine), Maryna Keda (National University “Chernihiv Colehium” (Ukraine), European University Institute (Italy), Vasyl Zelenko (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine), Tetiana Reva (National Academy of National Academy of Culture and Arts Management (Ukraine) and Bogdan Hryshetskii (National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (Ukraine).

On October 30, 2023 the UESA members participated at the UNICOM Roundtable "UNIVERSITY AND INCLUSION", which was held in the online format. The event addressed the challenges Ukraine, being a country with aggressive war on its territory, faces on the way of the creation of inclusive education for its society. In the welcome speech Zhanna Talanova (the representative of the NEO+ Ukraine), Guido Amoretti (UNICOM project coordinator, University of Genoa, Italy) and Nataliya Falko (rector, Bohdan Khmelnitskiy Melitopol Pedagogical State University, Ukraine) focused on the acute needs Ukrainian HEIs face in establishing inclusive educational opportunities for all members of Ukrainian society. During the event Tetyana Lomakina, Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for the Barrier-Free Environment addressed the state priorities for inclusion policies in education. In the contributions of Diana Spulber (University of Genoa, Italy), Tetiana Konovalenko and Yulia Shevchenko (Bohdan Khmelnitskiy Melitopol Pedagogical State University, Ukraine), Anna Afuzova and Iryna Markus (Ukrainian State University) focused on practices and experiences of creation of inclusive environment in Ukraine and international standards of inclusion for HEIs.

UNICOM Project Realization within the UESA in July 2023

Within the framework of the realization of the UNICOM project the UESA member Maryna Keda (Jean Monnet fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute (Italy), associate professor at the National University "Chernihiv Colehium" (Ukraine) participated at the study visit program to the University Genoa from July 24 to July 28, 2023. During the study visit the expereinces of the University of Genoa with regard to the third mission of universities were presented by Marco Invernizzi, Guido Amoretti, Diana Spulber and Micaela Rossi. The second part of the visit included participation at the Summer School "Cultural Studies and Cultural Dialog in the Intercultural Environment for Community Engagement", which emerged as synergy effect with other Erasmus + projects. Inclusion, life long learning, cultural codes, social innovations, role universities as change makers and many other topcis were discussed during the Summer School by speakers from National Dragomanov University, Institute of Higher Education of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Sumy Agrarian University, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Bogdan Khmelnytskyi Melitopol Pedagogic University.

Dr. Keda addressed the cultural dimension of the contemporary Ukrainian migration caused by russian aggression.

UKRAINIAN EUROPEAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION is a partner of the UNICOM project

Аs part of the implementation of the Erasmus+ project "Universities-Communities: strengthening cooperation"; (UNICOM) from April 11 to April 15, 2023, members of Ukrainian European Studies Association - Maryna Lytvyn (Member of the Board of UESA, Director of the Resource Center for Sustainable Development of Dnipro University of Technology), Iryna Losyeva (Member of UESA, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of International Relations of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv) took part in the Coordination Meeting and Study Visit to the University of Genoa (Italy). The goal of the project is to strengthen the social role of higher education institutions by intensifying the interaction of educational institutions with communities and society by supporting the third (social) mission of universities to ensure social cohesion, stability, sustainability and prosperity in Ukraine. Together with 19 partners, including the University of Genoa and the Security and Freedom Foundation (Italy), the University of Latvia (Latvia), the Czech University of Applied Sciences in Prague (Czech Republic), the Mittelstand University of Applied Sciences and the Accreditation Board for Entrepreneurial and Socially Involved Universities (Germany), the University Lund (Sweden), the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the leading HEIs of Ukraine discussed the experience of Italy in regulating the third mission of Universities at the national level. As part of the held International Conference "Intercultural Education: Daily Life and Crisis State", Maryna Lytvyn reported the results of a study on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Ukrainian HEIs during the wartime, Iryna Losyeva revealed the development of intercultural competencies as part of the international experience in education on the example of Ukraine.
